What is a Utilization Review (UR)?

A Utilization Review (UR) in healthcare is a critical process used by insurance companies and healthcare providers to assess the necessity and efficiency of medical services and treatments. It involves examining the need for specific healthcare services, procedures, and facilities to ensure that they are medically necessary, provided in the appropriate setting, and are cost-effective.

The goal of a UR is to make certain that patients receive the right care at the right time, without undergoing unnecessary or inappropriate medical treatments.

To be eligible for participation in Medicare or Medicaid programs, hospitals are mandated by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), a federal agency, to implement an effective utilization review program.
